Bacon Hummus – The Best Hummus Ever
I did. I named this recipe BACON HUMMUS and declared it THE BEST HUMMUS EVER. That’s a bold statement, I know, but trust me when I tell you this is absolutely the most delicious hummus I have ever eaten. Besides, I like to consider myself a professional hummus eater, so I’m highly qualified to make such a claim!
Before I go into why this is the best hummus recipe ever, I’ll first let you know that it actually happened by accident. I had just received a very special bottle of liquid smoke and was eager to test it out. Not even thinking about hummus, I set my sights on creating a BBQ-style tahini salad dressing. However, my intentions were derailed when the dressing turned out a little too bold and intense for a salad. What to do? I didn’t want the dressing to go to waste so I hastily opened a can of chickpeas, tossed them in my Vitamix along with the dressing, added a little Himalayan salt and EVOO, and turned it on high. Holy wowza! Complete foodgasm!
“I just made BACON HUMMUS!” was my first thought. Thanks to a little bottle of liquid smoke and a tahini dressing that flopped, my hummus experience reached epic proportions. That’s no exaggeration, either! I made another batch and literally ate it with everything for an entire week.
This little bottle of Liquid Smoke broadened my culinary horizons tenfold. When you open it and take a whiff, the first thing that comes to mind, literally, is bacon, the second is BBQ ribs. I was like a kid in a candy store and started jotting down all kinds of recipe ideas like tempeh bacon, BBQ baked beans, etc… “I can eat BBQ!” was all I could think, so you can imagine my delight when I accidentally discovered how to make BACON HUMMUS without actually having to use bacon.
This was such a huge deal for me because I’ve never liked the idea of using liquid smoke. Basically, I have a distrust of flavor extractions that aren’t pure because the process generally can’t be done without using a concoction of chemicals. It wasn’t until a friend of mine turned me on to this brand, that I purchased my first bottle. Oh man, I have been missing out. This particular brand of liquid smoke is made differently than other brands you find on grocery store shelves. Hickory and a little mesquite are burned at low temperatures while the smoke is captured and diverted into a tunnel. There, a constant stream of distilled water is channeled through the smoke to pick up the flavor. The liquid is then filtered to remove any sediment or oil before bottling. There are no other additional ingredients, making this one of the purest kind of Liquid Smoke available on the market. It is literally nothing but smoke-infused water, and the taste is nothing short of amazing!

As I said earlier, I ate BACON HUMMUS with everything for an entire week and loved it! If you’re one to only eat your hummus with carrot sticks or pitta chips, now’s the time to change it up, especially if you’re making this recipe. It’s a clever way to use batch cooking and keep your meals interesting. Just make a giant batch over the weekend and top it on everything. It also makes a tasty spread for morning toast with avocado. Anyway you choose, I guarantee you will love it!
